Two River Falls residents confirm getting a fishy fundraising letter from the ?2008 River Falls Area Fund Drive National Breast Cancer Research Center.
The invoice listed a suggested donation date of Sept. 12, had a Washington, D.C., address; the envelope listed a return address in Topeka, Kan.; and the apparent address of the charitys headquarters in Maryland.
Online research and phone calls reveal that the charity gets a less-than-positive review on scam.com as well as charitynavigator.org. The former said such a charity could not be found; the latter recognizes the Walker Cancer Research Center as the NBCRCs parent charity but gives it the next-to-lowest overall rating.
A call to the National Cancer Research Center in Washington, D.C., yielded a message advising that mailbox is full and cant receive messages. Repeated calls to the Walker Cancer Research Center (phone number not listed in solicitation) in Maryland reaches an automated voice saying, Hello, please leave a message after the tone.
A search of the Better Business Bureau turned up information that says about the Walker Cancer Research Center: Despite written BBB Wise Giving Alliance requests in the past year, this organization either has not responded to Alliance requests for information or has declined to be evaluated in relation to the Alliances Standards for Charity Accountability.
The BBB site goes on to say that refusal to provide the optional information may demonstrate a lack of commitment to being transparent.
